On Wednesdays We Wear Pink

Have you ever seen someone with their entire head of hair dyed pink? I have. And it's amazing. Full out. No regrets.

That's bravery people. Because you know where ever you go people are going to stare. You're lying if you say you wouldn't.

Check out some fierce woman and their pink hair.

Which is your favorite? Color? Shade? All over? Just a little bit?

How To Tuesday: Do Your Own Waxing

I preface today's tutorial with this:

Yes, you can in fact rip that strip off yourself, leaving in you in large amounts of pain. You can do it! If I got over it, you can too.

You'll need:

  • wax, obviously
  • large popsicle sticks
  • wax strips, cut in half hamburger style

Step 1: gather the wax

You want to do it quickly. Because otherwise it will dry, and then it hurts worse.

Step 2: apply the wax

When applying, you want to go with the grain. Go in the direction of the hair. The wax should be not too thin, not too thick.

Step 3: press and rip!

Press it down very well. Gather your courage, and pull it off against the grain!

Step 4: repeat. a lot.

You can use the same wax strip over a couple of times even though it was wax and hair on it. But only 2-3 times. Then grab a new one.

Also, don't put wax on the parts of your skin that you've already waxed. That's fresh skin under there. It can stand to be pulled off again.

Be brave.

Check out our post of the do's and don'ts of waxing before you do this at home yourself!

The Perfect Brush for Your Hair Type

I sometimes get a little OCD with my brushes. I want them all to match. I want to own every one in the set, even if I don't need it. And while I might like wasting my money on brushes I don't need, not everyone does.

So check it out.

If you have....

straight. You need a paddle brush. It's large area will help your hair to get smoother, faster.

volume. You need a round brush. They come in many different sizes, so depending on the look you want, choose the size accordingly.

short. You definitely need a Cricket Volumizer. Everyone needs one of these really. It does no wrong.

curly/kinky. You need a Denman. People with kinky curls swear by Denmans.

Obviously there are a ton of other brushes out there that do a ton of things. But this is just a general start to what could potentially be a large brush collection for you.

you've been warned.

How To Tuesday: Get This Look

We get "how do I do this?" a lot. Usually a client is holding a picture of a celebrity and commenting on their hair, or their makeup. But always they are wanting to recreate what they see in the picture. I do it too.

But wouldn't it be nice to look at a picture and be able to recreate it without having to ask your stylist or makeup artist? I think so. That's what today's tutorial is about. Learning to do it for yourself.

Let's take a look at Isla Fisher at The Golden Globes.

She's stunning right?

Now. Let's analyze.

First. Look at her hair. It's moderately thick. Is yours this way? Have you ever been able to achieve as much volume as she has? Or do you have super curly hair and have never been able to tame it without a team of professionals behind you?

Second. Start with what you know. You know that she used a curling iron. A large one, since the size of her curls are pretty much waves instead of curls. Look at her curl pattern. Are they all going the same way? Different ways? Toward her face? Away from her face?

We don't know what the back looks like, but we can guess. You could actually make this your own. Do you want it braided back there? Pinned? Or just swept to the side?

Third. Her makeup is simple. You can see her glowing, so you know she's using bronzer and a highlighter. Are these techniques you know how to use? If not, look them up.

Forth. Just do it. Try it out. If you don't get it right, start over.  Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to master the perfect curl or get your winged liner even. It's okay to try over.

A New You 2013

If you're friends with On Stage III on Facebook you know all about A New You 2013. A couple of weeks ago, we launched this campaign for an extreme makeover of sorts. We partnered up with CrossFit Uproar (you remember them!) and Hoopla Boutique.

People wrote in tellings us their stories and why they should win. We got a lot of great entries, and it was very hard to pick one. But we ended up picked Kim Martin, a mother who has had a lot of loss in her life.

Kim got a hair makeover yesterday. And she looks so fantastic I wanted to share. For the next two months though, she will be working out at Uproar, getting in shape and getting healthy!

Check out her transformation below.

And then...boom! Red head.

I just can't get over how amazing the red looks on her. It goes so well with her skin tone. What do y'all think of Kim's new look?

How To Tuesday: Blowdry a Pixie

I've told y'all already that I've cut my hair into a pixie. I'm finally, finally getting used to it! It took me a while to learn how to blowdry and style it.

I'm going to let you in on a secret.

That is a Cricket Volumizer. It's the best brush in the world. I use it for everything. But it's very good for short hair and bangs.

Check out the video below of me blowdrying my pixie. Hopefully it will help anyone out there who still hasn't mastered it.

A Little of the Work We Do

Behind this blog is an actual hair salon. All that "insider information" I'm always talking about is from the professionals that I work with. They are some of the best hair stylists around. The training they go through is top notch. But they are also getting to train with top stylists like Nick Arrojo, Alexandra Matiz, and Anthony Cole. So obviously, our stylists can create some killer looks.

I know there are some stylists who read this blog, so for y'all I'm going to get technical. Everyone else. There's pictures too!

Here is one of our models. This is her before.

Stephanie, the stylist that worked on her, was testing out to become a Director, our top level of stylist. She decided to get really creative with her color. Check out the sectioning she had to do.

As for the color itself, she used three different.

Main Red: 55/46 0/33 with 20 volume
Some red: 0/33 0/45 with 20 volume
Brown: 9/1 3/0 with 10 volume

She alternated each section with a different color. As you can see, the effect is beautiful. As for the cut, that was really technical, and something I don't even know if I could describe. But it's fantastic.

The light hits all the colors just right. So much dimension.

2013 Spring Hair Trends

This rainy weather has gotten me down. I wore bright orange pants today to try and counteract the gloom, it helped a little.  I'm just looking forward to Spring, and those few days of perfect weather. Because let's be honest...we really only get a few days.

With Spring comes new Spring hair trends. I'm pretty excited about this year's.

Knots
Givenchy

Last year we saw a lot of twists, but this year you can expect to see a lot of knots. top knots. low knots. side knots. braid knots. it's getting knotty this year.

Slicked

Loewe

Similar to last year's wet look, this year were seeing the hair still slicked back, but not as wet. Thankfully.

Braids
Marchesa

 They're not going anywhere.

Bold Colors

Bright colors. Streaks. Ends. All over. Any combination.

Waves

Versace
Waves and slightly messy hair is in for the Spring. I say, yay! That extra time to sleep in.

What other trends are you excited about seeing this year?

How To Tuesday: Shampoo Your Hair

Don't laugh. It needs to be talked about. Improperly washing your hair is a pandemic sweeping the nation...even the world. Like washing your face it is something you can just do without even thinking about whether or not you're doing it properly.

Luckily, you have me to save you from your improperly washed hair fate.

Step 1: soak your hair completely
Step 2: shampoo
You don't need a lot of shampoo.
"But Cassidy, it's doesn't lather properly without a lot!"
I know. That's why you have to wash your hair twice! The bottle doesn't say lather, rinse, repeat for nothing. The first time you wash your hair, really use your fingertips to break up all the dirt and oils on your scalp. It might not lather very well...but oil and water don't mix well.
Step 3: rinse
You don't have to worry about getting every last bit out on this go round.

Step 4: shampoo
Same amount of shampoo as last time. Maybe a quarter size or less. It should lather better now. Again, really work on your scalp. You don't really need to lather up your ends, the shampoo will wash them on the way out.
Step 5: rinse again
Now you want to make sure that you're getting all of your shampoo out.
Step 6: condition
ALWAYS condition. It deserves caps lock it's so important.

So, have you been washing properly?
