How To Tuesday: Flat Iron Curls

Here's a conversation I had the other day with my stylist, Monica.

Me: Will you give me a perm?
Monica: No.
Me: *Sad face*
Monica: Cassidy, why do you want a perm?
Me: Because I'm tired of curling my hair with a curling iron. It takes forever.
Monica: Well, no perm will give you curls like a curling iron.
Me: *Sad face*
Monica: Try flat iron curls.

Flat iron curls? That sounds a little oxymoronic. Well apparently flat iron curls are not only a real thing, but are super pretty. And as an added plus, they take about half the time of curling iron curls. There's no waiting around while the curling iron sets the curl in your hair. Sound pretty cool right?

Oh, so now you want to know how to do them? No more laughing at me? Okay well here you go.

$100 Makeover Challenge

We had a lot of positive feedback from the $100 Makeover post yesterday, so we decided to make a special out of it.

Until September 10, only at On Stage 3 in Magnolia, will we be running the special. Trish has decided to take the challenge and give a $100 makeover to anyone who mentions this ad. This includes a haircut, brow wax, and makeup application.

But what makes this special so, well special, is that Trish's haircuts alone cost $75. That's a savings of $30. That's a new pair of shoes people.

So call today. Book the makeover with Trish. Mention this ad. Save money.

It's that simple. (281)259-1222.

The $100 Makeover

I am super indecisive. Every other week I want something different. Bangs. No Bangs. Red hair. Brown hair. It's like I want a complete makeover all the time. I love that feeling of new hair and new clothes and new shoes...new everything.

But that can get expensive, wanting a new look all the time. My bank account gets mad at me, saying, "Come on Cassidy. You just decided you wanted to wear nothing but blue, and now you want to wear nothing but yellow? Make up your mind woman!"

... My bank account and boy friend sound remarkably alike.

So I've come up with a plan to keep my bank account from yelling at me. A quick and cheap makeover. You'd be surprised of how much little changes can change your whole look. Here are the three steps to your $100 makeover.

1. Haircut--$45

Emma Watson: 2009 (Left) and 2011 (Right)

Okay, okay. You don't have to cut all your hair off like Emma up there. But just take a look at how different she looks with her pixie cut. Older, her eyes pop, and it actually almost redefines her whole face shape.

But just keeping up with your haircuts can help. Your hair should be cut every 4-6 weeks, otherwise it can become limp and damaged. The cuts will help keep the shape and the shine that you want.

2. Eyebrows--$15

Google Images

Doing your eyebrows is like a mini-makeover in itself. And by doing your eyebrows, I mean getting your eyebrows done. I never advise waxing or shaping your own brows. You don't want to end up with a tadpole, rainbow, or no brows at all.

3. Makeup--$40

Google Images

This one is the easiest of them all. Most of us women wear makeup already, but I tend to get stuck in a makeup rut. I wear the same shadow with the same liner with the same lipstick. And I get so bored. Getting a makeup application and learning some new ways to do makeup for your face is one of the best ways to do an instant makeover. Plus, after it's done, you're already looking hot for that night out on the town.

You've Got Questions, We've Got Answers

I'm excited to announce that we are starting a new feature here at the On Stage blog called "Ask Ali". Ali, an associate stylist at On Stage Hair Design in Magnolia, will be answering questions that you ask.

Here's how it will work. You, our avid readers, will write into Ali with your questions and she will pick on and answer it here on the blog. Maybe your question is how to make your hair shinier or you want to know how to wear your hair to make that person that was always mean to you jealous at your high school reunion.

So write in your questions, and you'll get your answers.

How To Tuesday: Teasing

No, not the kind that you did to your little brother when you were a kid, the kind that makes for big hair. And really, isn't that we all want? A little big hair in our lives? No? Just me? Okay then.

Teasing hair has been my downfall for years now. When you work with stylists, but aren't one yourself, it's a little embarrassing. I'm constantly teased (Ha!). But no longer! I asked one of our stylists to show me how to tease properly. So now, I bequeath unto you my knowledge.

What you'll need...

  1. Comb
  2. Clips
  3. Hairspray

Step 1: Section off hair

Section the hair...pretty straight forward.

Step 2: Backcomb

This was the part I always had a hard time with. Section off hair, I got a gold star in that, but backcomb. What exactly does that even mean? Well apparently it means exactly how it sounds. Comb backwards, up the hair, instead of down the hair. Hairspray as you go along
  • A little extra tip: hold the comb parallel with the head.

Step 3: Continue backcombing

Continue up the hair into the sectioned off areas, spraying as you go, until desired height is reached.

Done and done!

How To Tuesday is going to be a regular feature on the blog. What kind of things would you like to learn? Let me know in the comments below!

Sunscreen It Up

I know what you're thinking...I live in Texas, it's 105 degrees outside. I know I need to wear sunscreen.

Yes, but did you also know that 90% of visible aging is due to the effects from the sun? The sun is hot, really, really hot. In fact, the surface of the sun is around 9,941 degrees Fahrenheit. That kind of heat barreling down on you everyday without any protection is not good for your skin or hair.

I tell my mom this repeatedly when she goes out to the pool without putting on any sunscreen, but she just waves me off and says that she needs a little vitamin D. Okay Mom, you're right, you do need some vitamin D. But according to US News, 10 minutes in the sun during midday is enough to get 20 times the daily amount.

Which brings me back to sunscreen. We need it, and the best kind to get is a broad spectrum or multispectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects against UVA and UVB rays. I won't go into the science of it, okay maybe only a little...both UVA and UVB rays have shorter wavelengths than the visible light spectrum, so you can't see them, but they still penetrate the atmosphere. Meaning, they can cause serious skin damage.

There are a ton of different sunscreens out there, so here are a few that I like.

Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscree, SPF 30, $45.50
Why I like it: It comes in two different shades, it is a powder form, so hello, nothing to rub in, and it can also be applied anywhere on the body.

Skin Ceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense, SPF 50, $30.00
Why I like it: SPF 50. I always say, the more the merrier. It also serves as a great primer for your regular makeup.

Don't forget to protect your hair from the sun! It can dramatically diminish the color and cause the hair strand itself it weaken and dry out. Try out Aveda's Sun Care products to help protect your hair.

Detoxify Your Hair

A couple of summers ago I took a scuba diving class in the Rec at Texas A&M University. Everyday for two weeks we scubaed in the dive pool, and every day I would blow dry my hair and cringe at the state of it. It never looked clean, and I could practically see the chemicals burn off onto my flat iron.
I pretty much thought that my long hair that I had been growing out for years was done for. My only hope was to cut it all off and start over.
But then I was introduced to a little miracle in the form of a clarifying shampoo. Now, my hair wasn’t perfect over night, but with the clarifying shampoo it got back to its long and luscious self. And not having to cut all my hair off, well that’s a win in my book.

Here’s some advice to help keep your hair the way you want it after a summer of intense heat and that pool time to cool off.

1. Protect your hair before getting into the pool. Wet all of your hair with regular tap water, it can only soak up so much water, so this allows your hair to soak up the regular water before soaking up the chlorinated water from the pool. Basically it just creates a buffer from the harmful chemicals.

2. Invest in a good clarifying shampoo. Chlorine won't come out with regular shampoo, and without removing it from your hair, your normal blow dry/flat iron routine will grind the chlorine deeper into the strands.
**It is especially important for blondes to use a clarifying shampoo to keep the hair from turning green.

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three, $9.00
Helps remove chlorine and impurities

Aveda Sun Care, $21.00
Fights against chlorine and salt buildup

3. Always use a good conditioner after a clarifying shampoo.

Try doing these steps next time you hop in the pool. Your hair will thank you, I promise.

I always find it interesting to look at celebrities and their ever changing hair styles. One of the most interesting people to take a look at is David Beckham. His style is constantly changing, from long to short, brown to blonde.
