June Spotlight Stylist: Amanda Hejl

Amanda Hejl is one of the new comers at On Stage Magnolia, but don’t let that fool you. Her resume is packed full with certifications and experience. After having received her cosmetology license eight years ago, Amanda went on a beauty industry binge. She took classes and received certifications, including her esthetician’s license, extreme lashes, injectables, and oxygen infused facials. These days, Amanda has left the world of skin behind and is solely practicing hair.

Her return to the hair industry has made her eager to learn and strengthened her ability to overcome obstacles. She draws her strength from the heroines in the novels she reads, insisting that even though the trials they are put through aren’t something that would happen to her, they keep her strong and able to withstand anything that is thrown at her.

So basically, she's really cool.

Amanda and her mother

You've had your license for eight years, but how long have you been at On Stage?
I started at On Stage in October of last year, but I'm just now getting on the floor. In fact, next week is my first week to be able to take clients for real.

What kind of training did you go through?
I pretty much relearned everything I was taught in school. On Stage is known for it's precision cuts and colors, that's because they teach it to you for perfection.

What certifications do you hold?
Oh boy, how long do you have? I've been to both hair and esthetician school. I'm also certified for a lot of skin procedures, like intracueticals, injectables, the librotron machine.

What are your specialties?
Color for sure. I love that we aren't stuck with what we have naturally. There aren't many people who are happy with their natural hair color, and if that's you, I envy you. But hair color is such an easy thing to change, and it can make a person feel so much more beautiful and confident.

What is your perfect hair color?
I've tried a lot of colors, and my favorite is beige blonde. It's a fine line to tread between gold and beige, but I like to live on the edge.

So you're adventurous?
Haha, no, not really. That doesn't mean I'm not down for an adventure every once in awhile, but I love to curl up with a good book. And besides, Peter Pan said, "To live would be an awfully big adventure."

Do you have a personal mission statement?
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

You've really embraced that in the salon.
Yeah, it was rough going for a little while. Relearning things you already know can be hard, but I'm ready now, and I guess you could say I've got my tap shoes on and that water is splashing.

April Spotlight Stylist: Lisa Dishman

This month's spotlight stylist is actually an esthetician ...so really it's spotlight esthetician  . I like to change things up every once in a while.

When I first visited On Stage I, our flagship location in Beaumont, I was able to tour the facilities and meet some of the staff there. When we got to the spa, the manager said, "Cassidy, you've got to meet Lisa." I had no idea who Lisa was at the time, but I quickly came to understand that her name was one to remember.

Lisa has been at On Stage for almost as long as it has been open and been an esthetician for twice as long. That's what you call a lifetime of knowledge. And knowledge is what she is full of. I learned a lot about skin (and envied hers) during our brief conversation. Believe me, if you've got a question, Lisa can answer it.

March Spotlight Stylist: Ali Boman

When I think of up and coming artists at On Stage, I automatically add Ali Boman to that list. Why? Because in the short amount of time that she has worked at On Stage, she has made her from from a stylist's assistant to an Associate and now a Stylist. That's a lot of work and a lot of passion.

And boy do her clients love her! She stays constantly booked and always has a full wait list. That's how you know she's as good I as I say she is.

But hair isn't the only thing that Ali is passionate about. Once you meet her, you'll fall instantly in love with her quirky personality, her unique style, and her ability to go weeks without washing her hair. (gross? no. jealous? yes.)

You need to meet Ali. Like right now.

How long have you been in the industry? And at On Stage?
I've been licensed for a little over 5 years, but have only been actively doing hair going on 3 years. I've been at On Stage for just over a year.

What is your favorite part about your job?
Everything! I love all of my clients and enjoy spending time with them. I love creative colors and cuts, correctional color...I love it all!

How would you describe your personal style?
Fashion forward and very unique.

Who inspires you?
God and everyday people who do the little things that go unnoticed and who go above and beyond.

What are your specialties?
I am a well rounded stylist, but the things that excite me are creative looks whether that be updos, color, cut, or even color correction.

Have you taken any special classes?
Creative color placement, precision cutting with Redken, an updo class, and lots of little classes throughout the years.

Do you have a personal mission statement?
I am a believer that success comes from within and my attitude determines how successful I will be. I try to motivate and inspire people to reach their potential and see the best within themselves.

There you go people. Remember her name.

February Spotlight Stylist

Last week I was talking with the manager at On Stage II in Beaumont. She was telling me about how one of her stylists is currently taking classes to become a Wella Master Color Expert. I thought, hey that's cool, but then I found out that there are only 13 people in the United States who are Wella Master Color Experts. Now that's cool! So who better to be February's spotlight stylist then Katie Bonura? No one, I tell you. No one.

Katie's road to become stylist began when she was just a junior in highschool. The girl's got drive. But all the hardwork and long hours paid off. In May 2007 she landed a job at On Stage II. Since then, Katie has worked her way up the ladder to become a master stylist, one of the highest levels at On Stage. But she still has some room to grow, and grow she will. This Fall, Katie will begin the first phase to become a Wella Master Color Expert. Not only will she be a premier colorist within the company, but also within the world. I can tell her dreams of becoming an Artistic Director and Educator will pay off soon.

Maybe you don't know Katie, but you should.

Hello, Katie!

What you consider yourself a specialist in?
Color is my passion.

What do you have the most fun doing?
I enjoy getting to know the clients and establishing a relationship with them.

What awards have you won?
I won 2007 Skill USA Customer Service for the state of Texas.

What kind of special classes have you taken?
I am a Sebastian advocate, certified in essential foiling, essential color, creative color, color correction, and a Wella colorist.

What do you think is your favorite look for the new year?
Doing creative color that is outside the box, yet professional for the work place.

What is your least favorite hairstyle of all time?
My least favorite hairstyle I had was this mushroom hairstyle. It was shaved up the back everyone called me a boy.

How would you describe your personal style and hair style?
I like to keep it simple with a little bit of edginess.

If you could have anyone's hair instead of your own, who would you have?
I like my hair for the most part but sometimes its too much hair to work with, so I would like to say Jennifer Aniston

Do you have a message that you would like to tell all your clients?
Once you have a great hairstylist, trust in them. And make sure you give them a chance to use their creative side.

Check out some of Katie's color work below, and corrective color at that!

January Spotlight Stylist

This month kicks off the Year of the Dragon. According the Chinese culture, the Year of the Dragon person stands out. Which is why, we're kicking off the spotlight stylist series with Janell Edgerton, a stylist at our flagship store in Beaumont.

Janell has been in the hair industry for almost a decade. That's 10 years of changing styles, changing education, and different people. When Janell made her way to On Stage, she knew she had found a home. This year, she hopes to reach her goal of becoming an artistic director.

I would say Nick Arrojo from "What Not To Wear".  He changes someone's look dramatically. It's exciting!

If you could have anyone else's hair, who would it be?
I would say probably anyone with long hair passed their shoulders. I've always had short hair and when I try and grow it out, I can never make it to that length. I always cut it off.

Spotlight Stylist: December

It is fitting that this month's spotlight stylist is Lynsey Robbins from On Stage III in Magnolia. Because you see, she loves the Christmas season as much, if not more than, I do.

I first met Lynsey a little bit over four years ago when I was leaving On Stage for college and she was just starting, and already I was impressed with her resume. After graduating from Baylor University, she decided to make her way into the beauty industry, and flew to California to attend Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts. There she studied the art of makeup, but it wasn't enough. So she came back to Texas to attend hair school, and has been with On Stage ever since.

Lynsey Robbins

Maybe you don't know Lynsey like I do, so here are a few things you should know about her.

How long have you been with the company?
It's been just about 4.4 years.

What are your specialities?
I can do it all! But I am the go-to-girl for airbrush makeup, and of course, you can't forget my charming personality.

What do you have the most fun doing?
I came into the beauty industry because I wanted to make people feel good about themselves, and that is exactly what I get to do everyday.

Have you taken any special classes?
I've taken a ton of classes but the ones that stand out are airbrush makeup, wedding makeup, and "These ain't your mamma's perms".

How would you describe your personal style?
I like to think of it as classic casual, with a little bit of country. I love my cowboy boots want to look professional, all while still having my own style.

What made you want to be a hairstylist?
I have always loved the industry: hair, makeup, and fashion.

If you could have anyone else's hair, who would it be?
I'm absolutely in love with Ginnifer Goodwin's hair right now.

Do you have a message that you would like to tell all of your clients?
It has been a great pleasure serving you these past four years and I'm so excited about the new year ahead. Thank you for your patronage, I am so blessed and thank God for each of you!

November Spotlight Stylist

This month's spotlight stylist is a part of a very special group here at On Stage Hair Design: The Design Team. The Design Team is made up of some of our most talented stylists, and Nellie Kimbrough is no exception.

Nellie has only been in the hair industry for four years, and already she is making a name for herself. Plus, she is juggling planning her wedding. Which, as anyone knows who has planned a wedding, is a great accomplishment in itself.

So, everyone, meet Nellie.

How long have you been with the company?
I've been with On Stage 2 years and been in the industry 4 years

What are your specialties?
Cutting and coloring is what i do best!

What do you have the most fun doing?
Spending time with my family and traveling.

Have you taken any special classes?
I went to  Paul Mitchell's signature gathering 2011 where i attended several cutting, coloring and styling classes.

How would you describe your personal style and hairstyle?
My personal style is a little funky/edgy and my hairstyle is constantly changing but is always some sort of extreme color..i don't do normal well.

What made you want to be a hairstylist?
I love to make people feel good about themselves and doing hair gives me a creative outlet.

In your opinion what is the worst hair style of all time? And the best?
The worst has to be reverse mullet aka the Kate Gosslin. The best I think the bob, when done right it looks good on just about everyone.

Do you have a message that you would like to tell all of your clients?
I love and appreciate all my clients. They make each day special!

October Spotlight Stylist

This month's Spotlight Stylist is Christina, one of the amazing girls from our flagship store in Beaumont. What makes Christina so special is that she started out as a nail technician, but she always had this strong passion about hair.

After four years with the company doing nails, she made one of the hardest decisions of her life and pursued a career in hair. Another four years later, she's never looked back.

As a Master Stylist (On Stage's third highest stylist level), she still has some room to grow and learn. But, watching her work, it's easy to see the love for what she does on her face.

"I believe to be successful you have to be passionate about what you do. As hairstylist, I think we should step out of our box, get uncomfortable, then learn how to do it better. It's the only way you learn from your mistakes and refine them."

Christina, Master Stylist at On Stage I.

I got to know Christina a little bit last week. Here are the amazing things she had to say below.

How long have you been with the company?
I've been in the industry for ten years, but have been with the company for eight. The last four years I have spent doing hair.

What are your specialties?
I love all aspects of doing hair, but I specialize in precision hair cutting and formal/editorial hairdressing.

What do you have the most fun doing?
I love going to get outside education. I'm able to offer more to my clients with what I've learned and it keeps my skills sharp. That's what I love about On Stage; they offer and give us those opportunities.

Have you won any awards?
No, but I would love to enter the NAHA competition and Trend Vision.

Have you taken any special classes?
Aside from the the in-house education that On Stage offers, I have also had classes through Paul Mitchell, Wella, and Sebastian.

How would you describe your personal style and hairstyle?
I can honestly say that I don't have any one particular style because it changes with whatever I'm feeling that day or whatever inspires me. If I had to put a label on it, I would say I'm urban chic.

Although I've had many different hairstyles and hair colors, I've really enjoyed having my hair blonde with shorter layers, simply because it's so versatile.

I'm told you're the Sebastian advocate, what is it about that line that you like so much?
I love that Sebastian is so focused on what the hair needs so that you can almost prescribe a product for whatever hair type you're working with. It provides moisture, hold, control, and it smells amazing. There is really a product for everyone.

What are your hair dreams?
To provide education for my peers. I would lvoe to enter and win the NAHA awards or Trend Vision. But at the end of the days, it's to always make my clients happy and feel good about themselves and their image.

What made you want to be a hairstylist?
I knew in junior high that I wanted to be in this industry. I don't remember what the defining moment was, but that I just remember knowing.

Do you have a message that you would like to tell all of your clients?
My goal is not only to get you to step out of your comfort zone but to give you a look that not only suits your style but personality as well.

Want to book an appointment with Christina? Call (409)866-0560.

September's Spotlight Stylist

Every month here on the On Stage blog, we want to recognize one stylists from one of the three On Stage salons. Our stylists are pretty much amazing. They all work so hard, are constantly taking classes, furthering their education, and keeping up with the current hair trends.

This month I want to introduce you to a wonderful lady over at On Stage Three in Magnolia: Monica. Just this week Monica was moved up a level and is now at our highest stylist level of director. This isn't an easy feat. It takes years, lots of education and requirements, and a test out to get to where Monica is today. And she does it all with a two-year-old. She's pretty much superstylistwoman. It's easy to see why she's this months spotlight stylist.

Monica and her son Jacob

I talked to Monica this week about her career and life as a hair stylist. Here's what she had to say.

How long have you been cutting hair?
This October will be five years

What you consider yourself a specialist in?
I am pretty much a well rounded stylist, I can do a little of everything, except men's fades scare me to death!!!

What do you have the most fun doing?
I love haircutting, I love that I can see how it's coming together instantly.  I love the fact that I have the talent to make people feel good about themselves.

What awards have you won?
I won a BEACON award in hair school, it was a contest put on through the Professional Beauty Association to see the talent of young and new stylist.

What kind of special classes have you taken?
I've attended a class with Nick Arrojo, Nick Berardi, and an intense two day color class with Alexandra Matiz.

What do you think is your favorite fall look?
Long layered copper red hair or long layered rich chocolately brown!

What is your least favorite hairstyle of all time?
Oh by far the mullet, what was the person thinking when they said...oh this would look good if I just cut the top off and left back really long!  Seriously???

How would you describe your personal style and hair style?
Simple.  My hair is simple (I'm trying to grow it out), my closet is simple.  I have a lot of solid colored clothing and a lot of staple pieces.  I love the accessoried look but it's just not me.  I love to be comfortable in my clothing.  When I'm not at work, I'm a tshirt and jeans type of girl!

If you could have anyone's hair instead of your own, who would you have?
Any of the kardashian sisters.  I know it's fake but man is it gorgeous...one of these days!

Do you have a message that you would like to tell all your clients?
First of all, thank you for all the support and loyalty of my clients.  Without them I would have no career, a lot of my clients are like my family.  I want my clients to come to me and have full trust in me, I'm not going to give them something that I know they can't pull off or won't have time to fix.  I just want them to feel good when they leave my chair!
